Abstract:
For the past 10 years considerable effort has been exerted on the study of materials for submarines and researcy vehicles which can iperate at great depths in the ocean. In one of these studies, Wenk pointed out that with the development of new materials it is feasible to design submarine hulls for operation at a depth up to three miles without sacrifice of speed or payload. As a result of repeated dives to these great depths at which hydrostatic pressures are extremely high, the structure experiences cyclical loading and low cycle fatigue emerges as a serious problem.
