Abstract:
Employing a method involving electropolishing follwied by shot peening, we have raised fatigue strengths in automotive valve springs to exceptional levels. Briefly, the electropolishing virtually eliminates all small surface defects and minimizes the effects of larger defects by removing a measured depth of metal. Shot peening then induces compressive stresses in these surfaces.
