It may be useful to add a few words about the origins and early development of industrial shot peening. Although the earliest publication (Foeppl, 1929) and the earliest patent application (Verwerk, 1934) were found in the German literature, it seems that the process first was applied in production and developed in the United States, without benefit of the German work.
