Abstract:
Shot peening can be used to reduce surface porosity and increase the fatigue life of ductile iron cast components. In its early stages of development the process was used by GMC engineers to increase the fatigue life of valve springs. The basic technology of shot peening is discussed, including the definition of terms such as intensity and impact angle, and methods of measuring peening effectiveness are described. Process recommendations are presented; a critical factor is the uniformity of shot size.
