Abstract:
A brief description of shot peening and the equipment used--shot blast machine, Almen strips, blocks, gages and the shot, usually standard steel (RC45-55)--is given. Intensity (amount of compressive stress) and coverage (amount of surface area peened) are very important. Results are given of fatigue tests on SAE grade 4018 ductile iron steering knuckle castings which were shot peened for varying times. Peening increased fatigue life up to 721%
