Abstract:
The paper shows that TIG welded or pulsed arc TIG welded joints of high strength steels have the same fatigue strength as manual arc welded and TIG dressed joints. In practice TIG welding of cover and cap passes over underlying MAG welded passes can replace and more time consuming TIG dressing of all weld toes of a totally MAG welded joint. After TIG welding respectively pulsed arc TIG welding and subsequent shot peening the fatigue strength under completely reversed bending surpasses the fatigue strength of the unpeened high strength base material.
