Abstract:
A method of analysis for finding optimum shot peening specifications for given parts and loading conditions is explained. The method is applied to a part (4340 steel) with fillets loaded in rotating bending. The computed optimum intensity is 9 C. Fatigue tests are reported which compare this intensity to the conventionally specified 7 A. The higher intensity proved clearly superior.
Descriptors: Nickel chromium molybdenum steels-- Mechanical properties; Residual stress; Fatigue life; Shot peening; Fillet welds; Crack closure.
