It is probably because they are so commonplace tht helical coil springs are frequently regarded as low grade components by designers. As a consequence they are rarely given sufficient attention at the design stage, yet are invariably required to operate reliably for many years under arduous conditions and at stress levels far above other components within the mechanism.
