Abstract:
The following is an excerpt from Blast Cleaning and Allied Processes - Volume 1 by H.J. Plaster. This book is an invaluable resource for our industry and we will be sharing parts of it with you in the next few issues of the newsletter. In the last issue we covered the patents issued through 1903. 1904 By 1904, Matthewson had turned his attention to the blast cleaning of rods and wire. His design was based upon the use of two pressure units built together to enable both mixing valves to be "in line". The object was to pass the wire through both mixing tubes to enable the abrasive to be fed around the wire to enable the compressed air blast to scour the material around the wire. In this patent, Matthewson claimed:" By the method and means described it is possible for the first time since 1870 (the date of the original sand-blast patent) to clean scale off wire and similar lengths of metal in a satisfactory manner."
