Ra = ARITHMETIC AVERAGE ROUGHNESS HEIGHT
Ra is now the universally official symbol for the parameter that was formerly called AA in the United States and CLA in England. It's the one parameter that's standardized all over the world, and is specified and measured far more often than any other parameter. The "checkmark" symbol used on drawings to specify a surface texture control requirement is a Ra specification.
