Abstract:
Editors Note: This article was adapted from a presentation made my Charlie Mason of Menasco Aerospace during the 1991 Shot Peening workship. While it describes the variations that can occur during peening, it is relevant to blast cleaning, too. Monitoring and controlling blast cleaning processes provides: confidence that the product is receiving consistent coverage, lowered equipment maintenance costs, and efficient use of media and subsequent cost savings.
If you can't monitor it, than you can't control it. The shot peening process can be monitored, and it can be controlled. One of the best tools to maintain consistent shot peening quality is referred to as SPC or Statistical Process Control.
